identify early signs of developing mental health problems with the help of the Teen Mental Health First Aid

Teen Mental Health First Aid

Adolescents often turn to their peers for support during challenging times. The Teen Mental Health First Aid (teenMHFA) programme equips students in Year 7 and above with the skills to recognise, respond to, and support a friend experiencing mental health challenges—while ensuring they know when and how to seek help from a trusted adult.

Why teen MHFA Matters

  • Early Intervention – Identifies the early signs of mental health challenges before they escalate.
  • Suicide Prevention – Helps students recognise mental health crises and know how to respond safely.
  • Peer Support – Encourages compassionate, informed conversations among young people.

What Students Will Learn

  • Recognising the Signs – Understanding the warning signs of common mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and substance use.
  • Responding to Crisis – Learning how to support peers in distress, including those experiencing suicidal thoughts or self-harm.
  • The teenMHFA Action Plan – A step-by-step framework for offering safe, appropriate, and effective support.
  • Seeking Help from a Trusted Adult – Knowing when and how to involve a responsible adult or professional for further assistance.

Who Can Participate?

  • Students in Year 7 and Above – Gain practical skills to support friends and contribute to a mentally healthy school environment.
  • Schools & Educators – Schools can only offer this programme when a percentage of their teachers are trained as Youth Mental Health First Aiders (YMHFAiders).
  • School Counsellors & Wellbeing Staff – Strengthen your school’s mental health support framework with evidence-based training.

At Training on the Go, we believe in empowering young people with knowledge, confidence, and compassion to make a difference.
